Backstory

While browsing the internet for inspiration, I came across a stunning piece of modern wall art made of metal. It featured an interesting mesh-like net and metallic rings. I wasn’t sure what the net was made of, but I loved the look. Since I couldn’t work with metal, I recreated the design using paper and substituted the net with netting fabric. This is my version of that beautiful piece—made entirely from inexpensive, repurposed materials.

The store-bought pieces almost always look better—but they often come with a hefty price tag. I prefer making things by hand for a fraction of the cost. There’s a special satisfaction in figuring out how it’s made and knowing I saved money in the process.

Written Step-By-Step instructions

  1. I cut printer paper in three equal parts and using a bamboo skewer made straws with them as shown.

2. Using a plier I flattened the straws.

3. Next I curved the straws and stuck them to as shown.

4. Using a pot, lid, and jar, I shaped circles with these long curved straws.

Made smaller circles using a plastic jar.

I used lid to make medium size circle.

5. Stuck three circles as shown.

6. Next, I painted the circles with Champagne Gold acrylic paint.

Brushed 24K gold acrylic paint on top.

I made 5 sets of these circles.

7. Used 3.5″wide and 20″ long strip of poster board and folded it in accordion fold using ruler. Using ruler I made the fold 3/4″ wide.

This way I got accordion fold with uniform folds as shown below.

8. Next I stuck the netting cloth on a paper circle using glue gun. I stuck double layer of the cloth.

9. Cut out extra cloth around the ring leaving 1/4″ seam.

9. Next placed the accordion fold in half circle shape and stuck it on the cloth as shown.

I stuck back the seam I left as well.

10. I cut out extra cloth hanging.

11. I Stuck a posterboard circle big enough to cover the center of the half circle of folded posterboard. I made altogether 7 circles of two different sizes.

12. I painted the circles with layering different colors to makethem look metallic.

First layer was black acrylic paint.

Next layer was Champagne Gold.

Next layered with 24 K Gold Acrylic Paint.

Next brushed white acrylic paint on the parts of the circle.

13. Next I made drops with glue gun on the center.

After the glue drops dried painted them gold

14. Stuck 1″ craft mirror and rhinestones in the center.

15. Made white and black stripes on the outskirt of the circle and dots in the center of the circle.

16. After the paint dried I arranged the rings and the circles in a certain way and stuck them with each other.

17. This is how the wall decor looks when done.

Tips And Tricks

  1. In the step 6 when I painted the rings they seemed to lose their shape. So next time I would paint the tubes first before shaping them in a circle.

2. Another thing you may do is insert a wire inside the paper tube to get perfect circle. But buying a wire will cost you money. Rather than buying wire I decided to go with without the wire.

3. While sticking the cloth onto the ring please watch your fingers since glue from glue gun can be really hot!
