Lid For The Paper Mache Vase/Pot

  • Post category:toys

Description:
In a previous post, I shared how I made a paper mache vase. In this post, I’ll show you how to create a lid for that vase, transforming it into a functional pot. With the lid in place, you can use it to store crafting supplies like rhinestones, pearls, silicone molds, or anything else you’d like to keep organized and tucked away.

Step-By-Step Instructions for making the lid for the pot.

1.Once the paper Mache pot had completely dried, I moved on to creating a lid that would fit snugly. To measure the inner rim accurately, I placed a sheet of tracing paper over the mouth of the pot. Using my fingers to gently feel the edge of the rim underneath, I carefully traced a circle with a pencil. This gave me an accurate outline of the pot’s opening. I then cut out the circle to use as a template for crafting the lid.

2. Next using this circle I cut out four cardboard circles of the same size and shape.

3. I stuck all four cardboard circles together using school glue. Then I sanded the edge of the circle to smooth it out (You will find the explanation on this in the tips below). Then for a neater look I stuck paper napkin on the edge and set it aside for a bit.

4. Next I drew a circle big enough to cover the opening of the pot. This circle is little bigger than the previous four circles.

5. Next I stuck a disk made out of aluminum foil on this bigger size circle as shown.

6. Next I covered aluminum foil with paper Mache clay.

Made Sure this lid covers the opening of the pot fully.

7. Once the lid looked acceptable I moved on to stick the circle I had set aside.

8. Next I made a nob for the lid. For this I made a ball of aluminum foil and covered it with paper Mache clay and stuck it on the lid using school glue.

9. Next I made motifs using silicon molds to embellish the lid.

When the clay dried I painted the lid matching the pot. When the paint dried, I stuck blue rhinestones on the lid.

This is how the lid looks

This is how the lid fits on the pot.

Lid MakingTips

1.Trace the Rim for Accurate Shape:

Handmade pots are rarely perfectly circular. Instead of measuring, trace the rim directly by feeling its shape. This ensures your lid fits the actual contours of the pot.

2. Sand for a Smooth Fit
Once your lid is shaped, sand it well so it snaps on and off the pot easily. This helps avoid a tight or uneven fit.

3. Adjust for Paint Thickness
If you’re painting the inside of the lid, keep in mind that paint can make it stick. To prevent this, make the inner circles of the lid slightly smaller than the rim size to allow for the extra thickness paint adds.

I didn’t make this lid by itself. It was a part of a pot project. To check out my pot project. click on Pot . Also to check out my paper Mache clay recipe click on Paper Mache Clay Recipe
